The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a two-vehicle fatal crash at 8:35 p.m. Thursday at Ohio 420 and Libbey Road in Lake Township.
According to the OHP release, the crash occurred when a 2000 Buick Century driven by Ronald Moore, age 61, of Des Moines, Iowa was southbound on Ohio 420 and was attempting to turn left onto Libbey Road when it was struck by a 2005 Ford Escape driven by Albert Zablocki, 53, of Northwood, who was northbound on Ohio 420.
Following the crash, Moore’s vehicle left the roadway. His passenger, Linda Moore was trapped and required having the jaws of life to extricate her. She was later pronounced dead at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center in Toledo.
Zablocki and his passengers, Agnelz Zablocki, 53, and Alicia Zablocki, 11, were taken to Bay Park Hospital for minor injuries. The crash remains under investigation.

Carter house unveiled to public

Visitors got a look at rejuvenated history as the venerable Carter House was unveiled to the public Friday.
A ribbon cutting and open house for the site, located at 307 N. Church St., and owed by the Wood County District Public Library, was held Friday afternoon. Another open house is scheduled for today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
"It's always great to see local history preserved," said Wood County Auditor Michael Sibbersen at the event. "And hopefully it'll be another jewel in the crown of Bowling Green."
The library plans to use the home for special events, meeting and book groups, and will also make the site available for rental to the public.
The more than $150,000 renovation of the space has been years in the making.
Located across Church Street from the library, the two-story home was originally build around 1877 by Norton Reed. It was purchased in 1897 by Benjamin James and was subsequently known as the James House. James was an attorney and served in the Ohio General Assembly.
The house has a deep connection to the library – the Shakespeare Roundtable met in the home in 1905, and the group would later conceive of the first library in the city. That idea, over time and through a variety of forms, would eventually grow into the current library.
The home was later bought in 2005 for $250,000 by Robert and Patricia Mauer, who later gave it to the library. The gift was made in honor of Maurer's aunt, Martha Carter, an educator who strongly believed in libraries.

The warm summer brings about plenty of fun in the sun with picnics, camping and backyard parties. However, these months can produce severe weather, from tornadoes to hurricanes. In addition to planning fun outdoor activities to enjoy in the summer heat, Americans should also prepare their homes for the worst that Mother Nature can bring.
Recent weather events like Superstorm Sandy along the East Coast and the tornadoes in Oklahoma have heightened awareness about emergency preparedness and the importance of having reliable backup power. Severe summer storms can strike at any moment anywhere in the U.S., so it's important for all homeowners to develop an emergency plan now, before the next big storm hits. Here are a few tips to help people protect their homes, belongings and families during severe weather events.

Grand Rapids doesn’t find dog park plan fetching

GRAND RAPIDS - A proposed idea for a village-run dog park fizzled out Monday at a council meeting.
"I don't think it's the village's responsibility," said council member Carolyn Erdody.
The dog park idea was discussed at council's previous meeting at the request of a citizen.
Village Administrator Chad Hoffman presented council members with some background on the idea Monday.
"It looks like there are dog parks out there on city, village and county property, but they are not run by the village," Hoffman said.
Instead, he said, most of the dog parks he researched were leased from the municipality, but operated and maintained by a private group or company.
"I think if someone wants to present a plan to the village, we will review it," council member Curt Williams said.
Also at Tuesday's council meeting, Erdody expressed concern over speeding in the village.

Northwood to combine property and income tax for new school

NORTHWOOD - The Northwood Board of Education has decided to try a combined earned income tax and property millage request to fund a new school.
At Wednesday's meeting, the board voted 4-0 to ask the Wood County Auditor's Office to determine the amount of the income tax and property tax needed for the project.
Superintendent Greg Clark said administrators have estimated the earned income tax needed would be 0.25 percent, which would collect $225,876 each year for a continuing time; and the property tax would be 4.9 mills to generate $11.7 million over its 37-year term.
But Clark cautioned those figures might change since his staff based estimates before passage of the new state budget bill that eliminates rollbacks on levies passed in November.
No site has yet been selected for the new PK-12 building, but Clark hopes to have that in place before the Nov. 5 election.

Retailers report strong gains for June

NEW YORK (AP) — June sales heated up for stores.

Costco Corp., Fred's Inc. and Stein Mart Inc. were among the retailers that reported their strongest sales gains since January, as shoppers, enticed by warm weather and an improving economy, took advantage of summer discounts.

Revenue at stores opened at least a year — an industry measure of a store's health — rose 3.9 percent in June compared with the same month a year ago, according to a preliminary tally of 12 retailers by the International Council of Shopping Centers. The mall trade group had expected an increase of 3 to 3.5 percent.

The data, released Thursday, offers positive signs for the back-to-school season, which is the second-biggest shopping period behind the winter holidays. June is when stores clear out summer merchandise to make room for goods for fall, so brisk sales mean that stores likely won't be stuck with piles of summer shorts and T-shirts that they need to get rid of.

June's performance was its best performance since January's 4.5 percent gain and showed a gradual improvement since early this spring. The tally was up 3.4 percent in May and 3 percent in April.
