Pig scam sticks man into pen

The expression "when pigs fly" indicates a lack of probability of something happening. A proposed pig insemination farm never took off, either.
The only thing that flew was the money two investors entrusted to Jason E. Schwartz, of North Baltimore, in 2007.
Schwartz was sentenced to 180 days in the Wood County jail and ordered to pay $127,500 in restitution on Tuesday afternoon for bilking the "investors."
He was sentenced on two second-degree felony offenses of unlawful securities practices. His attorney characterized his client's business plan as "ill conceived."
One of the investors told the Sentinel-Tribune, Schwartz "burned through" the $120,000 of an initial investment in the proposed farm to be located in Bucyrus. The investor and a friend each invested $60,000 initially, while he later sunk another $20,000 into the failed operation.
The farm was to have been a livestock production facility where sows would be artificially inseminated to produce piglets for sale.
Schwartz, 39, received the investments between Oct. 1, 2007 and Aug. 1, 2008. He was indicted last August with two counts of unlawful securities practices, passing bad checks and aggravated theft. Through the plea agreement, Schwartz entered a no contest plea in March to the reduced second-degree offenses. Per the agreement, the latter two charges were dismissed at sentencing Tuesday.

PEMBERVILLE - A planned Home Depot distribution center in Wood County will create an influx of cash for the Eastwood School District.
The school board this morning approved a tax abatement agreement with the company in which Eastwood will receive $675,000 per year beginning in 2015 and continuing through January 2029. The amount received over that time will be $10,125,000. Home Depot then will begin to pay property taxes in 2031.
If all goes as planned, construction on the distribution center on 157 acres near the southwest corner of U.S. 20 and Pemberville Road may begin in July or August.
The proposed facility will be 1.63 million square feet - larger than the Chrysler machining plant in Perrysburg Township.
The company is asking local and county officials for a 100-percent abatement of real property taxes for 15 years.
"It's almost like getting a winning lottery ticket. It's marvelous," said school board President Sherri Sheffler after the meeting.
"We could not be happier. We just need to get input, put things in place and spend the money as wisely as we can," she added.

Citizens were told Monday night that several steps are being taken to address east side neighborhood issues.
"We are slowly and deliberatively looking at the many things our city deals with," said Community Improvement Committee Chairperson and Council President John Zanfardino.
Specifically he noted:
•    Receipt of a proposed ordinance that would address how the city might deal with dead trees on private property that could be deemed a safety hazard to neighboring property or the public right-of-way. The legislation was not introduced Monday night.
•    Receipt of a proposed ordinance that would reconsider signs that are placed on rental properties listing a property owner and contact phone number. Zanfardino said the committee was not ready to move forward on the issue.

AP Exclusive: Taliban offer to free US soldier

$

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — The Taliban proposed a deal in which they would free a U.S. soldier held captive since 2009 in exchange for five of their most senior operatives at Guantanamo Bay, while Afghan President Hamid Karzai eased his opposition Thursday to joining planned peace talks.

The idea of releasing these Taliban prisoners has been controversial. U.S. negotiators hope they would join the peace process but fear they might simply return to the battlefield, and Karzai once scuttled a similar deal partly because he felt the Americans were usurping his authority.

The proposal to trade U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl for the Taliban detainees was made by senior Taliban spokesman Shaheen Suhail in response to a question during a phone interview with The Associated Press from the militants' newly opened political office in Doha, the capital of the Gulf nation of Qatar.

The prisoner exchange is the first item on the Taliban's agenda before even starting peace talks with the U.S., said Suhail, a top Taliban figure who served as first secretary at the Afghan Embassy in the Pakistani capital of Islamabad before the Taliban government's ouster in 2001.

"First has to be the release of detainees," Suhail said Thursday when asked about Bergdahl. "Yes. It would be an exchange. Then step by step, we want to build bridges of confidence to go forward."

All-women jury chosen for George Zimmerman's trial

SANFORD, Fla. (AP) — A jury of six women, five of them white and the other a minority, was picked Thursday to decide the second-degree murder trial of George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer who says he shot an unarmed black teenager, Trayvon Martin, in self-defense.

Prosecutors have said Zimmerman, 29, racially profiled the 17-year-old Martin as he walked back from a convenience store on Feb. 26, 2012, in the rain, wearing a dark hooded shirt. Zimmerman identifies himself as Hispanic.

The race and ethnicity of the minority chosen for the jury was not immediately available.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys chose the panel of six jurors after almost two weeks of jury selection. In Florida, 12 jurors are required only for criminal trials involving capital cases, when the death penalty is being considered.

MONTREAL, Quebec (AP) — A massive explosion at a fireworks warehouse killed two people Thursday, police said, leaving a huge plume of smoke blanketing an area west of Montreal.

A series of explosions subsequently leapt from the charred building after the initial blast at B.E.M. Fireworks Thursday morning near Valleyfield, Quebec. Images from the scene showed a building near a major highway completely destroyed.

Provincial police said two bodies were found in the wreckage but they did not identify them.

Nearly two hours after the blast, fireworks could still be heard exploding at the scene of the fire that continued to burn out of control hours after the explosion, according to witnesses.

Stocks extend slide as China adds to worries

NEW YORK (AP) — There was no let-up in the flight from stocks and bonds Thursday, and the Dow Jones industrial average fell more than 300 points.

A day after the Federal Reserve roiled U.S financial markets when it said it could step back from its aggressive economic stimulus program later this year, financial markets continued to slide. A slowdown in Chinese manufacturing added to Wall Street's worries.

The breadth of the sell-off was seen across global financial markets, from sharply lower stock markets in Asia to falling government bond prices in Europe and the U.S.

The Dow fell as much as 362 points in the afternoon, its biggest drop in more than seven months. The Standard & Poor's 500 was on track for its worst performance in more than two months. Small-company stocks fell even more than the rest of the market, a sign that investors are aggressively reducing risk.

The yield on the benchmark 10-year note rose to its highest level since August 2011.

Facebook introduces video on Instagram

NEW YORK (AP) — Facebook is adding video to its popular photo-sharing app Instagram, following in the heels of Twitter's growing video-sharing app, Vine.

Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom said Thursday that users will be record and share 15-second clips by tapping a video icon in the app. They can also apply filters to videos to add contrast, make them black and white or different hues.

"This is the same Instagram we all know and love but it moves," he said at an event held at Facebook's Menlo Park, Calif., headquarters.

Vine, which launched in January, has 13 million users and lets people create and share 6-second video clips. Instagram has 100 million users, up from 20 million when Facebook bought the company more than a year ago. If users like it, Facebook's move could propel mobile video sharing into the mainstream.

To use the video feature, Instagram users can tap on the same camera icon they use to snap photos. A new video camera icon will appear on the right side. Tap it and a screen with a red video button will let you record clips of sunsets, kids running in parks or co-workers staring at their computer screens.

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. mortgage rates fell for the first time in seven week, keeping the average on the 30-year fixed loan just under 4 percent. But rates are expected to surge next week, as markets respond to Chairman Ben Bernanke's comments that the Federal Reserve will likely reduce its bond purchases later this year.

Mortgage buyer Freddie Mac said Thursday that the rate on the 30-year loan eased to 3.93 percent last week. That's down from 3.98 percent last week but is still the highest level since April 2012.

The rate on the 15-year mortgage fell to 3.04 percent from 3.10 percent. That's the highest since May 2012.

Freddie Mac surveys lenders across the country on Monday through Wednesday each week. Bernanke's comments during a news conference Wednesday afternoon weren't fully reflected in the latest rates.
