Wood County Safe Communities announced that a Thanksgiving holiday traffic blitz will be performed from 6 p.m. Thursday through 6 a.m. Dec. 1.
The holiday is one of the busiest travel times of the year, and travelers can become more focused on celebrating rather than getting to their destinations as safely as possible.
Over the holiday last year, there were 30 traffic crashes in Wood County with eight injuries. The holiday season in 2011 had 61 total crashes, including one fatal crash and 25 injuries.
Night is a particularly dangerous time because people are less likely to wear a seatbelt. Through the 2011 Thanksgiving period in the U.S., 57 percent of passenger vehicle occupants killed in nighttime crashes were not wearing seatbelt.
