The Owens community, center staff, and parents using the center were notified of the situation Thursday.
"It is with heavy heart that Owens Community College is going to be closing the Child Care Center on the Toledo-area campus as of June 30, 2013," said Brad Meyer, director of public and media relations at Owens, in an interview this morning.
The reason for the closure is financial, he said, indicating that the college has been required to subsidize operations at the center, but "we are no longer able to absorb financial losses" at the facility while maintaining the expected quality of service.
The center's fiscal year 2013 losses are expected to top $340,000 by June 30, the end of FY 2013.
The center provides care for 94 children, focusing on the ages of 6 weeks to 6 months during the school year, and to school-age children up to age 8 during the summer. It is open to faculty, staff, students, and community members.
