Veteran Matt Schilz has edged out Matt Johnson for the starting quarterback spot in Bowling Green State University’s football opener.
The Falcons host Tulsa Aug. 29 with kickoff at 7 p.m. in Perry Stadium.
‘‘Matt earned the job. He had a really good camp,’’ BG head coach Dave Clawson said Tuesday morning. ‘‘We feel really good about Matt Johnson, too.
‘‘We hope Matt Schilz has an unbelievable senior year, and plays really well,’’ Clawson continued. ‘‘It’s also good for us to know that we have another quarterback who is playing at a real high level.’’
The two have battled through fall camp, including two scrimmages, and both played well.
‘‘Matt Schilz had the best camp since he’s been here. Matt Johnson had the second-best camp of any quarterback we’ve had here since Tyler Sheehan (in 2009),’’ Clawson said. ‘‘Right now, we have two quarterbacks playing at a higher level than we had a quarterback play at any point last year.’’
Clawson said there were three areas in which Schilz stood out in the fall drills — better pocket management than in previous years, making plays by running, and overall management of the passing game.
It was a difficult decision, Clawson said, as Johnson had a strong week of practice last week, and performed well in Sunday’s scrimmage.
‘‘To me, it was the total body of work in the three weeks of camp,’’ Clawson said. ‘‘Matt Schilz had a little bit of an edge, but it was not an easy decision.’’
