ROSSFORD — The Board of Education tonight approved a three-year contract for its teachers.
The contract calls for no raise this year, 1 percent next and 1.5 percent in the final year of the pact.
The contract also requires to teacher to pay a higher percentage of the health insurance premium. They now pay 10 percent. Under the terms of the new contract that will increase to 12.5 percent the first year and then to 15 percent in the year and subsequent years.
Superintendent Daniel Creps also said they will pay higher copays for doctor visits and prescriptions.
The bargaining unit includes about 140 educators.
The contract pass 4-1 with Jackie Brown casting the dissenting vote “regretfully.”
Board member Bev Koch thanked the teachers for their cooperation in working on the contract.
Teachers ratified the deal Thursday.
In explaining her vote, Brown said she was still concerned about the state of the district’s finances and was concerned the cost of the contract will cost the district personnel.
The district, said Treasurer Jamie Rossler, has been collecting about $1.4 million a year less than it has been a couple years ago because of county property devaluation and the phase out of the Personal Tangible Property tax.
Rossler did report that the district expects to get $118,000 more in state aid in the 2014 school year and $211,000 more the next year.
“We’re just happy the funding didn’t go down for us,” he said.
The budget also eliminates the state’s homestead exemption provision. “It takes that burden from the state, and places it on the local homeowner,” he said.
He said he expects that to be a trend.
Rossler said the new teachers contract is a step toward helping address the district financial problems. Also, the proposed building plan, which consolidates the district’s three elementary schools should also result in savings.
Still, he said, voters may be asked for an operating levy in a year or so, he said.
