HOUSTON (AP) — Customers of a Wal-Mart store in Houston have fallen ill after two men sprayed a noxious substance that led to the evacuation of the building.
Deputies with the Harris County Sheriff's Office responded Sunday night along with a hazardous-materials unit. Dozens of employees along with upward of 150 customers were driven from the store by the unknown substance.
Three customers were taken to a hospital for treatment and sheriff's spokeswoman Tebben Lewis said Monday their conditions were not known. She says their exposure to the chemical is not considered life-threatening.
Other customers had trouble breathing and suffered burning eyes and throats.
The two suspects fled and authorities are reviewing surveillance tapes as part of the ongoing investigation.
The store reopened later in the evening.
