
Giles was born in Toledo, Ohio and raised in Perrysburg. He started his football career at Perrysburg High School.
After graduation he was asked by an Ohio Congressman to enter the Air Force Academy and join their first class. He did and was quickly added to their football squad as a tackle. In his senior year his team played in the 1958 Cotton Bowl and had an undefeated season. He graduated as a pilot and flew a B-52 and other reconnaissance aircraft. He also coached football at the Air Force Academy. His Air Force career took him all around the world. He retired as a Major after 23 years of service.
