ROSSFORD – A 20-year veteran of the Rossford Police Department pleaded guilty to domestic violence in Wood County Court of Common Pleas last week.
Kevin Swanson, 43, Toledo, received a 180-day suspended jail sentence, and is to be on probation for three years. His female victim will have a civil protection order against him for five years.
Swanson pleaded on July 26, and court papers in the matter were filed Tuesday.
According to an indictment, the incident occurred May 4 between Swanson and a pregnant woman. Swanson was originally indicted with a fifth-degree felony count, but the charge was reduced to a misdemeanor under a plea deal.
Rossford Police Chief Glenn Goss said that officially Swanson has not been terminated from his position, but “most likely he will not remain because federal law, the Brady law, prohibits anybody in any state” convicted of domestic violence, including a misdemeanor, from owning a firearm. As a result of this law, Swanson would be prohibited from continuing to work as a police officer.
Goss said that the City of Rossford’s legal department is working out the terms of Swanson’s dismissal with the Ohio Patrolman’s Benevolent Association, the union which represents Rossford police.
