Despite the late hour Wednesday night, both professional bowlers and the fans watching were checking scores closely at Al-Mar Lanes.
Only the top 24 advanced to today's competition in the PBA 50 Regional Midwest Classic.
After the last pin fell, Michael Tryniski of Fulton, N.Y. had the top spot in qualifying at 2,053 pins, a nearly 257 average for the eight games. Ron Mohr of Eagle River, Alaska, was 12 pins back at 2,041.
Bowling Green league bowler Steve Jakubowski survived a torrent of late scoring on the second squad of the day to finish in 23rd at 1,840.
Despite making the cut, Jakubowski of Temperance, Mich., who makes the trip each Monday night to bowl in the Sentinel Classic at Al-Mar, told one of his friends, he was not going to be satisfied just to make the cut, he wanted to advance further in the event.
Tryniski said he saw in practice what he needed to do and it carried him to the top of the leader board.
"I knew that straighter was better than curving and I just had to stay strong with the ball," he said.
Most of the bowlers were playing the extreme outside line with quite a bit of speed.
