Geologist Bob Vincent doesn’t believe fracking will occur in Wood County. He does believe more oil can be drilled, using conventional methods.
At the invitation of Bowling Green Mayor Richard Edwards, Vincent, a professor emeritus at Bowling Green State University, delivered a geology lesson about the possibilities of hydraulic fracturing, a method of extracting natural gas trapped in shale. The method uses horizontal drilling with shafts running thousands of feet under and parallel to the surface.
A petition is being circulated to get a citizens bill of rights aimed at banning fracking in the city. Vincent’s talk on Thursday attracted about 50 people to city council chambers, a turnout that surprised the speaker.
