ROSSFORD - A petition to let residents weigh in on whether Rossford will remain a member of TARTA is circulating.
The petition would override City Council's June 24 5-2 vote to keep the city as a member of the regional transportation system.
Donald Montague, one of the organizers of the petition drive, is confident the petition will receive the 275 signatures (10 percent of the votes cast in the last election) it needs to get on the ballot.
"I'm confident we'll have nearly twice as many as we are required to have," he said by telephone Tuesday. "That's our goal. We're pretty close to being there already."
The deadline for the petition to be submitted to the Wood County Board of Elections is Aug. 7.
Montague said at this point the campaign is only saying that voters should have the final say on TARTA.
When the city joined the system it was by citywide vote, and when levies are passed it is through elections, Montague said. The decision on the city's status within TARTA should also be decided by a citywide vote.
