SYLVANIA — Lorne Don knows a lot about how Caroline Powers can play golf.
Don watched Powers closely for the last four years at Michigan State, where he was an assistant coach and Powers was developing into one of the top college players in the nation.
So when Powers, now playing in her second LPGA tournament as a professional, started off her round by blasting two iron shots 10 yards further than expected on Thursday in the Marathon Classic, Don knew she either nervous or jacked up. Don, who was named the head women’s golf coach at Tulane last week, is Powers’ caddy for the tournament.
Powers recovered from her errant start and although she did not make any birdies, she was able to grind out a 3-over par 74. Powers will tee off for the second round of the Marathon Classic Friday at 1:55 p.m., starting on the 10th tee.
‘‘She handled herself well. She made a couple great up-and-downs for par which kept her round going,’’ said Don. ‘‘She did not make one birdie, which for her is very unusual. Hopefully (Friday) the birdie putts will fall and she will shoot a low score.’’
