AKRON — Bloom-Carroll scored seven runs in the top of the first inning on the way to an 11-1 victory over Eastwood in a Division III state semifinal softball game Friday.
The game, which was played in Akron’s Firestone Stadium, was called after five innings due to the mercy rule.
The Eagles scored their only run in the bottom of the fifth inning on Emily Helm’s single, which was Eastwood’s only hit of the game.
Whitney Foster started the Eastwood fifth inning with a walk and Morgan Corns was inserted as a courtesy runner.
Corns advanced to second on a fielder’s choice grounder and stayed at second on a ground ball back to Bloom-Carroll pitcher Taran Alvelo, who got the out at first.
With two outs, Helm then grounded a single between the second base bag and the second baseman to score Corns.
‘‘I was pretty excited about that. When I went up to bat I wanted to make sure that I did something for the team because I wanted to keep us in the game,’’ Helm said.
Alvelo, a sophomore, got a strike out to end the game.
The first five hitters in Bloom-Carroll’s batting order had hits in the first inning, including Alvelo who hit a three-run home run. The Eagles also made three errors in the first inning.
The Bulldogs added two more runs in both the second and third innings.
While Bloom-Carroll was pounding out 12 hits, Alvelo allowed only three base runners while striking out eight. In addition to the walk and single in the fifth inning, Anna Rahrig reached on catcher’s interference in the second inning, but a double play got Alvelo out of the second inning.
A first-team All-Ohio selection, Alvelo was dominating against the Eagles. She threw only 52 pitches in the five innings, with 40 strikes.
‘‘We’re just not used to the fast pitching, so we’re just kind of going up there and swinging. After a few innings we kind of turned it up a little bit and were making more contact,’’ Foster said. ‘‘We just didn’t put the ball in play in the right spots.’’
The Eagles finished 29-4 and made the first regional softball appearance in school history. Eastwood is 53-8 over the last two seasons.
‘‘We haven’t experienced losing very often and these players have been very special to me and they have worked really hard to get where we’re at,'' Eastwood head coach Joe Wyant said.
