After 12 years with Bowling Green Schools, Martha Fether has decided to retire.
Fether's last day with the district, as principal at Kenwood Elementary, will be June 28.
She has spend 12 years in Bowling Green, starting with eight years as principal at Crim Elementary, and has 31 years in education.
She surprised a lot of people with her decision to retire this year, instead of waiting another year as she had planned.
The school board accepted her retirement at a special meeting Tuesday.
"It really came as a surprise," said Superintendent Ann McVey.
She added that the open position has already been posted.
Fether said she made her decision about three weeks ago.
That decision had many factors.
"These state mandates. I've never seen such instability at the Ohio Department of Education in having us do mandates then changing them."
