“The reason for the closing is just the economic conditions,” said Joe Wasson, owner. “It has just gotten to the point where we can’t operate anymore.
“It’s hard to compete and to get people to drive out to these small towns,” he said.
Bennett’s roots date back to 1906 when the store was Diller Furniture Store owned by Frank Diller. In 1953, the store was purchased by the Bennett family.
Wasson and his father, Charles (Chuck), who passed away in December, took over ownership in 1996. Both worked for many years as salesmen for the business.
The impact of the store’s closing will greatly impact this small village in northwestern Hancock County.
