'Procedural errors' slow down COPS grant request in Rossford

ROSSFORD - Council will be taking a closer look at a proposed grant application that could pay for a new police officer.
Members voted unanimously Monday to send back to committee an ordinance that would have allowed Rossford Police Chief Glenn Goss to apply for a COPS Hiring Program grant.
The COPS Hiring Program provides 75 percent of a new officer's salary for three years, not including fringes and benefits, paid by the U.S. Department of Justice. The city would then commit to paying 100 percent of the officer's salary for a fourth year. The application is due Wednesday.
Because of the size of the police department, the city would be able to hire only one officer using the grant funds, if awarded.
Discussion on the issue was contentious at the meeting, as council President Larry Oberdorf Jr. felt the measure had been brought before council too speedily, and without going through the proper procedures.
