Voters gave a strong vote of confidence to Bowling Green’s Parks and Recreation program Tuesday, with the 1.4 renewal getting just under 60 percent approval.
The tally was 2,882 in favor, with 1,942 opposed or 60 to 40 percent.
“The community came through for us again. We’re very, very thankful for the support,” Director of Parks and Recreation Dr. Michelle Grigore said Tuesday night.
Grigore said she no idea how the vote would go and said she had been concerned the anti-tax sentiment associated with the school levy might spread to parks and recreation. She said the levy usually gets about 63 percent voter support.
“By the time the levy expires we will have gone 17 years with the same millage. It’s a stretch, but we will make it work. We have made cuts,” she said.
The 1.4-mill levy generates $634,131 a year, or about one-third of the department’s budget.
Kent Strange and Karen Ripey headed the levy committee.
