NORTH BALTIMORE — The school district here can put another levy in the “win” column.
The district’s request for the renewal of an 8-mill property tax passed tonight, 230-204.
The levy, however, is for a continuing time length, meaning it will never expire.
“It’s a little closer than I had hoped,” said Superintendent Marlene North about the results.
But she thinks switching the levy from a five-year term to continuing status had something to do with that.
In the past, the tax has come up for renewal every five years.
The levy is estimated to bring in $577,416 annually and will continue to help pay for operating costs of the district including utilities, salaries, supplies and technology.
North Baltimore taxpayers have supported the levy for more than 20 years. Its passage will not result in new taxes.
The levy monies help support the district’s $8 million annual budget.
“We’re just pleased that it passed,” North stated.
She added, “We appreciate (residents) continued support. We will continue to work hard to continue providing the good programs that we’re offering.”
